A calico cat walks the length of the sheet, past a bonsai pine, a basket of tangerines and an open veranda looking out onto a garden. It is painted in loose watercolour on cream with an ochre wash at the edges. Lower down sit a black rotary telephone, a mantel clock, an onigiri on a cushion, and the same calico nosing at a goldfish bowl.

Notes from The Fox: Engawa is the wooden veranda running along the outside of a traditional Japanese house, the spot a cat picks for the afternoon sun. The whole sheet is built around that one idea.
